Everyone wants to be the hero of their story, but Jim Lake Jr., one of the main characters of the show, would have never expected to become a Trollhunter. Originally created by Mexican director Guillermo del Toro and based on the homonym novel by Del Toro and Daniel Kraus, the show quickly became a co-written and co-directed work. The voice cast counts rather known actors, including Mark Hamill, Tom Hiddleston, and Ron Perlman to cite a few.
The whole series revolves around Jim, the first human to be chosen by Merlin’s amulet to protect both trolls and humans from evil trolls called Gumm-Gumms. If Jim is the chosen one, then why does the title implies multiple Trollhunters? Let’s say that circumstances allowed other people to become Trollhunters ad honorem, alongside Jim. This plurality is constantly stressed during the series, to underline that no one can really succeed alone.
I really enjoyed following the adventures of this bizarre group of friends, and even if the targeted audience is technically children I found it rather interesting and catchy. Of course, you ought to appreciate animation to enjoy it fully. The best example I can give is that the show been recommended to me by my dad.
You’ll be cast in a fantasy world where everything is possible and flows smoothly without it being too absurd. “Trollhunters” has 3 seasons, and is the first series within the ‘Tales of Arcadia’ trilogy, Arcadia being the town where all the main human characters live. The second series is called “3Below” – about aliens. The third is “Wizards” – and deals with…well…wizards. I find it genius how all the series are connected by almost invisible threads and hints scattered here and there. Nothing is left to the chance.
